Obituary: Douglas Campbell Megginson, 2003 Source: The Daily Progress, January 21, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Douglas Campbell Megginson Jr., 76, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord Saturday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2003. He was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Gladstone, (Nelson County), the son of the late Douglas Campbell Megginson Sr., and Verdie Duncan Megginson of Gladstone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an aunt and uncle, Iva and Forest Duncan; his wife, Estelle Megginson, a son, Douglas "Butch" Megginson; a brother, James A. "Jimmy" Megginson; and an uncle, Irma Duncan. Following his service in World War II, Doug received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1946, and retired from the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1981. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke. His affiliations include Williamson Road Lodge No. 163 AF & AM, Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Kazim Shrine Temple. Doug had a great love for trains. He reached out to others with love and compassion and will be well remembered for that. Doug was loved by many people and will be greatly missed. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Gwen Megginson of Charlottesville; step- daughter, Samantha Hammond and her husband, Hugh, and her daughter, Iris, all of Roanoke; step-daughter, Kim Grafton and her husband, Steve, her daughter, Stephanie, and her son, Steven, all of Virginia Beach; a step-son, J. Matthew Irish of Norfolk; a sister, Margaret Thornton of Concordia, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Oakey's North Chapel. Interment with Masonic Rites by Williamson Road Lodge will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Oakey's North Chapel.
