Obituary: William Andrew Powell, Jr. Source: The Daily Progress, April 25, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow, aquaair@erols.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- William Andrew "Brother" Powell Jr., 81, of Amherst, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Fairmont Crossing Nursing Home in Amherst. Born November 19, 1921, at Ellmington in Nelson County, he was a son of the late William A. Powell Sr., and Helen Ballowe Powell. He was a retired foreman with Central Construction Co., of Richmond for over 30 years, a member of the former Elma United Methodist Church for over 60 years, and a present member of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Amherst. William was an avid horse and mule lover and most of his life he worked on the farm and garden with his steadily teams. He took great pride in his former home and property "Chilly Hill" near Amherst prior to moving to Amherst. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Catherine E. Powell; his four sisters, Dorothy Wilson of Madison Heights, Betty Duncan of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mary Williamson of Rustburg and Lucille Paige of Lynchburg; two brothers, Calvin C. and David E. Powell, both of Rustburg; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, with the Rev. John Campbell and the Rev. Allan Monfius officiating. Interment will be in Amherst Cemetery.
