Powell Decorated W.W.II veteran FABER - Calvin Rhoe "C.R." Powell, 87, of Irish Road, Faber, (Nelson County), died Friday morning (Feb. 20, 2004) at his residence after a brief illness. Born Nov. 27, 1916, in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Nathaniel R. Powell and Ollie Simpson Powell. Calvin attended Lovingston High School and later was employed by the DuPont Corp. of Waynesboro. He was a decorated World War II Army veteran, attaining the rank of sergeant in the 338th Infantry. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Award in 1944 after being wounded in action in Northern Italy, along with the Bronze Battle Star Award. He was a former school bus driver with Nelson County Schools and a former employee of Floyd's Grocery at Lovingston, a retired U.S. Rural Postal Mail carrier in the Faber community and a self-employed farmer. He was a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a charter member of the Lions of Nelson where he received numerous awards, including the Melvin Jones Award. He was an active member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church where he served as church deacon and trustee, chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, and trustee and sexton of the church cemetery. He was a member of Gideon's International Camp 4512 of Nelson County, a member of Disabled Veteran's Camp 8 of Campbell County, VFW Post 7701 of Colleen and American Legend Post 17 of Shipman. He was a member of the Nelson County Men's Club and co- founder of the Nelson County Rescue Squad of Faber where he served as a board member. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Virginia Baker Powell, on Aug. 3, 1985; and his three brothers, Russell, Allen and Frank Powell; along with his sister, Ola May Powell Allen. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Martin Powell; two stepsons, Tracey C. McFadden of Charlottesville and Christopher S. McFadden of Piney River; one stepgrandson, Timothy S. McFadden; and his mother-in-law, Ruth N. Martin of Faber; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted Sunday (Feb. 22, 2004) at 3 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Dr. Tim Mink and the Rev. David Swing officiating with interment in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by VFW Post 7701 of Colleen. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, Va., 22901 or the Nelson County Rescue Squad, P.O.
