Obituary: George Henry Saunders Source: The Daily Progress, Sunday, October 5, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow, aquaair@erols.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- George Henry (Jack) Saunders, 83, of Lovingston died Friday Oct. 3, 2003, at the Lovingston Health Care Center. Born Aug. 26, 1920, at Schuyler (Nelson Co.) he was a son of the late Frank Leslie Saunders and Mildred Roberts Saunders. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Maria Purvis Saunders, and his brother, Massie Edward Saunders. Jack was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, a U.S. Navy Veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict and later retired a chief dispatcher from the Southern Railroad with over twenty years of service. He then excepted the position of chief deputy with the Nelson County Sheriffs Dept. and also served as dispatcher during his tenure. He was also a former employee of the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative and served as civil defense coordinator for Nelson County. Jack was an avid sportsman and excelled in the game of Pool as well as hunting and fishing and was a member of V.F.W. Post # 7701 of Colleen. He is survived by his children, Trudy S. Helms of Sterling, Sue S. Johnson and husband, Frank, of Lovingston and Samuel Clay (Sam) Saunders and wife, Peggy, of Shipman. His brother, Frank I. (Billy) Saunders of Lovingston, two sisters, Marionette (Sandy) Thornton and husband, Ed, of Richmond and Thelma S. Gray of Sharon, Pa.; along with nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at 2 p.m. from Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. John P. Campbell officiating with Interment in Mountain View Cemetery in Lovingston. Military Rites will be accorded at the graveside by V.F.W. Post # 7701 of Colleen. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7-9 p.m. and suggest that Memorials take the form of contributions to the building fund of Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 264, Lovingston, Va. 22949 or Nelson Co. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 44, Faber, Va. 22938.
