Obituary: Virginia Irving Smith, 2003 Source: The Daily Progress, February 28, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow -------------------------------------------------------------------- Virginia Irving Smith, 72, of Arrington, departed this life Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville. Born Oct. 17, 1930, in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late John and Lucy Irving. She was a member of New Mount Baptist Church, where she faithfully served the senior choir until her health failed. She leaves to cherish her memory five sons, Melvin Smith of Sacramento, Calif., Abraham Smith Jr. and James Smith, both of Arrington, Clinton Smith of Charlottesville and Johnnie Smith of Louisa; four daughters, Nancy Dennis, Mary Giles, Jannie Giles and Carolyn Brice, all of Charlottesville; one brother, James F. Irving of Arrington; two sisters, Idabelle Calendar of Lynchburg and Alease Irving of Charlottesville; two brothers-in-law, James Washington of Arrington and Paul Smith of Maryland; four sisters-in-law, Sadie Garland of Shipman, Ruth Irving and Mary Irving, both of Maryland, and Mildred Smith of Amherst; three sons-in-law, Jay Dennis, Carl Giles and Sherman Giles, all of Charlottesville; two daughters-in-law, Grace Smith of Louisa and Barbara Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Mount Baptist Church, with the Rev. Parnell officiating. Burial will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the funeral time.
