'Smitty' Smith, 2000 Source: Unknown Newspaper Contributor: Carol Harlow --------------------------------------------------------------------- VERONA - John Thurman "Smitty" Smith, 76, of Troy Hill Trailor Court, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 3, 2000) at Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville. He was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Montebello, a son of the late Willie Ambrose and Hattie Williams Bradley Smith. He was a member of the VFW. He was preceded in death by a companion, Elizabeth Earhart; three brothers, Waymer C. Smith, Alfred W. Smith and Manson M. Smith; and a sister, Mittie S. Lausior. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Kimberley Smith of Staunton, and Anthony and Judy Smith of Waynesboro; a daughter, Yvonne Griffin of New Hope; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Weldon and Virginia Smith of Waynesboro, and Fred and Ann Smith of Crimora; three sisters and brothers-in-law. Bethna and John Paleologos of Rockville, Md., Ethna Reddick of New York, Odessa and Ishmell Roebuck of Upper Marlboro, Md. He also leaves behind his daughter's fiance, Bobby Holmes of New Hope; and friends, Ann and Becky, Mr. and Mrs. Roadcap and Patsy Smith. Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339 and special guest the Rev. Bill Cole of Calvary Baptist Church, Waynesboro, will hold a graveside service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hamrick Funeral Home. Also, Steven and Kimberley will receive friends and family at their home any time at 207 George Street in Staunton.
