Obituary: Ezra H. Allen, 1998 Source: Unknown newspaper Contributor: Shirley Houk ---------------------------------------------------------- WAYNESBORO -- Ezra Harold "Huzzy" Steele, 76, of Waynesboro, died on Wednesday (March 4, 1998) after a long illness. He was born on Sept. 14, 1921 at Montebello, a son of James Finley and Mary Ella Steele. He was a veteran of World War II who entered as a Lee Volunteer of Virginia into the Navy in 1942. A front-page article in The Daily News Leader (July 21, 1992) told the story of five boyhood friends who entered the war together. He worked for Hemmingway Transport as a truck driver, retiring in 1982. He was an avid fisherman and coached many years in Little League, Babe Ruth and Senior Babe Ruth. In addition, he was a catcher for the Waynesboro Generals in the '30s and '40s. He was also a volunteer for the Waynesboro Fire Department. Surviving are his widow, Hazel Snead; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Jerry and Kathy Steele; and two grandchildren, Kenneth and Christopher Steele. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro by Dr. Harold Bare, assisted by the Revs. Tom Hammond and Victor Morris, with burial at Augusta Memorial Park, with military rites by Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339. Pallbearers will be Marvin Steele, Red Rucker, Marvin Norman, Russell Eavey, Clarence Ward and David Snead. The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
