Obituary: Ruby Lorraine (Fitzgerald) Thompson, 2003 Source: The Daily Progress, April 22, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ruby Lorraine Fitzgerald Thompson, 80, of Shipman, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at the Lynchburg General Hospital, after a lingering illness. Ruby was born April 23, 1922, in Nelson County, a daughter of the late Percy A. Fitzgerald and Edna Wood Fitzgerald. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William S. "Hoot" Thompson Sr.; her sisters, Aileen F. Jackson and Beulah F. Ragland; her brothers, Clyde, Wallace, Graham, Peyton and Carroll Fitzgerald; a grandson, Clinton Daniel Thompson; and a granddaughter, Sarah Aileen Thompson. Ruby was a very active member of Shipman Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was church pianist until recent years, served on many fund raising committees, served as Sunday School Teacher, and any other functions she was asked to serve in. She was a devoted Christian, wife, and mother and gave according to her ability. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie T. Bryant and her husband, James, of Tye River; her sons, William S. "Bud" Thompson Jr., and his wife, Denise, of Shipman and Charles E. Thompson and his wife, Melissa of Arrington; two step- grandchildren, Jimmy and Chris fortune; along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Shipman Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Massie, the Rev. David Blevins and the Rev. Peyton Fitzgerald Jr., officiating with interment in the Davis Cemetery at Shipman. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ruby's residence in Shipman and suggest that memorials take the form of contributions in Ruby's memory to Shipman Baptist Church, 746 Craigtown Rd., Shipman, Va. 22971 or Nelson County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 44, Faber, Va. 22938.
