Obituary: Bessie Mae (Meeks) Thurber, 95, died Sept. 12, 2002 Source: The Daily News Leader, September 14, 2002 Contributor: Charlie Truslow ----------------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Bessie Mae (Meeks) Thurber, 95, of 117 Rose Hill Circle, and 410 Parkwood Lane, Staunton, widow of Claudy Hampton Thurber, died at 6:10 p.m. Thursday (September 12, 2002) in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville. She was born on November 28, 1906, (in Nelson County) a daughter of Edward William and Gertrude (Fitzgerald) Meeks. Mrs. Thurber was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist for seventy-five years. She was also a member of the Golden Deeds Bible Class and Helping Hands Circle of the church. In addition to her parents and her husband who died on April 23, 1993, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Meeks and Cline Meeks, four sisters, Nell Sherman, Catherine Fisher, Lillie Fitzgerald and Levi Bryant. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann (Thurber) and Roy M. Hubbard, Jr., of Staunton; brother, William Meeks of Stuarts Draft; a number of nieces and nephews, and two dear friends, Vada Tuning and Jean Orr. Mrs. Thurber will always be remembered for her enthusiasm for life, sunny disposition, and for the love she always gave to all with whom she came in contact. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday (September 16, 2002) in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David W. Lord and the Rev. Dr. J. Paul Rowe. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Gene Thurber, David McAllister, Edward Meeks, Bennie Taylor, Raymond Logwood, Forest Peters, James Blackburn, Donnie Meeks, and Loyd Stanley. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Golden Deeds Bible Class and Helping Hands Circle of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
