Obituary: Raymond L. Turner, 67, of Charlottesville, departed this life on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003. He was born in Nelson County, the son of the late Charlie and Ardelia Wells Turner. He was married to Joan Vaughan Turner. He retired after over 45 years of service with the Microbiology Department of the University of Virginia Medical School and was still working part-time at the Lab at the time of his death. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Nelson County. Later he joined Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church, Charlottesville and was a faithful and active member serving on the Usher Board and was always a willing volunteer to help in any capacity. In addition to his beloved wife, Joan Vaughn Turner, he leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Gregory Turner and his wife, Laura of Stuarts Draft, Gary Turner, and Raymond Harris of Charlottesville; three step-sons, Jerry Johnson Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline of Wake Forest, N.C., Brian Johnson and his wife, Alease of Chester, and Todd Johnson and his wife, Margo of Los Angeles, Calif.; a step-daughter, Karen Chambers and her husband, Tim of Charlottesville; a devoted daughter-in-law, Ramona of Louisa; two brothers, EddieTurner and his wife, Mamie, and Charlie Turner Jr. and his wife, Marion, all of Charlottesville; a sister, Eva Henderson of Charlottesville; a devoted cousin, Ralph Wells of Keswick; three grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2003, at Mt. Zion African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Avenue, with Dr. Alvin A. Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens. His remains will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the services.
