Obituary: Donald Wayne Viar, 2003 Source: The Daily Progress, January 25, 2003 Contributor: Dennis Truslow, --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Donald Wayne Viar, known better as "Don" or "Donnie" to his friends and family, 50, of Afton, (Nelson County), passed away from this earth Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, to be an angel in heaven. He was born May 19, 1952, to Jessie J. Viar and Ruby "Jackie" Viar of Yancey Mills. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Betsy Craig Viar; two devoted sons, Travis Wayne Viar of Waynesboro, and Jason Scott Viar of Red Hill; three sisters, Linda Fitzgerald of Waynesboro, Shelby Shifflett of Mechums River, and Barbara Sandridge of Yancey Mills; three brothers, Ronnie Viar, Jimmy Viar, and Billy Viar, all of Yancey Mills; he was a devoted grandaddy and pappaw to, Travis Allen Viar of Florida, Daniel Wayne Viar of Waynesboro, and Ryan Sidney Viar of Red Hill. Donnie was an electrician by trade and was very talented in the areas of welding, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanics. His hands were always fixing and working on some project. He had a warm heart towards helping everyone, many lives were touched and he will always be remembered. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He served in the Marines from 1969 to 1972, serving his country in the Vietnam War, and worked as a guard in Henderson Hall in Washington, D.C. Donnie was a survivor of lung cancer but succumbed to a brain tumor. The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Piedmont for their love and care for Donald and the entire family during his illness. Donnie's body will be cremated and his ashes will remain at his home, since that was his favorite place to be. There will be no public service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.
