Winston, 79, of 2671 Berry Hill Rd., died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Mt. Woodland Baptist Church, Greenfield, Va. He was born March 25, 1923, in Nellysford, (Nelson County), Va., a son of Andrew and Cornelia Vest Winston. He retired from the DuPont Co. with 37 years of service, and was a member of Mt. Eagle Baptist Church, Nellysford, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Staunton, Va., served on both Deacon Boards and sand with the Men of Zion. He was a member of the Valley Ridge Elk's Lodge # 1442 and the Fishermen Club of Crozet, Va. His parents; his former wife, Catherine Winston; a stepson, Elwood Brown; two sisters, Signora Hargrove and Laura Bell Woodfork; four brothers, Willie, Roy, Charles, and McKinley Winston preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Virginia L. Vaughn Winston of the residence; one adopted son, William Winston of Charlottesville; two daughters, Shirley Smith and her husband, Howard Lee of Nellysford; 12 step-children; four grandchildren, Howard L. Smith, Brian N. Smith, Kimberly S. Blakey and her husband, Paul W. Smith of Waynesboro; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Doak; three brothers-in-law, John Doak of Staunton, Clarence Doak of Pennsylvania, and Houston Doak of Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Maynard Jones and the Rev. Horace Spear assisted by the Ministerial Alliance. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Staunton. Pallbearers will be Deacons from Mt. Eagle Baptist Church and Mt Zion Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fishermen Club. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Viewing will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Staunton. The family will receive friends at the residence.
