Wood The Honorable Sheriff Ronald R. Wood of Piney River died Tuesday Nov. 30, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Nelson County Sept. 6, 1937, he was a son of the late Edward D. and Helen Tyree Wood. Ronald came to the Sheriff’s Office of Nelson County as a volunteer in the 1960s. He became a deputy in 1972, was elected sheriff in 1991 and re-elected in 1999 for his third consecutive term. He was a member of Piney River Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee; a member of the Virginia Sheriffs Association; the Piney River Volunteer Fire Dept. and Board of Managers, and an avid supporter of the Ladies Auxiliary; a member of Tobacco Mountain Chitterling Club; the Massies Mill Ruritans; Nelson County Lions; and Crime Stoppers of Central Virginia. He was devoted to the citizens of Nelson County and his service and memory will be cherished by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Patricia Massie Wood; three daughters, Shelia Wood, Susan Thompson and her husband, Billy, and Michelle Baldwin and her husband, Gary; three sisters, Lorene (Lokey) Massie of Lowesville, Regina Cash and her husband Lincoln, of Amherst and Lanice Campbell and her husband, Willie, of Hampton; two brothers, Billy Wood and his wife, Marie, and Carroll Wood and his wife, Kathy, all of Lowesville; three grandchildren, Hannah and Ethan Wood, and Kasey Thompson; and his mother-in-law, Zella Massie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Kidd, and his father-in-law, T.J. (Jeff) Massie. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Piney River Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Michael R. Fitzgerald, the Rev. David Williamson and the Rev. William E. Dawson 11. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 10 p.m. this evening at the Piney River Volunteer Fire Dept. in Piney River.
