Obituary: Fred Crowell Wray, 1999 Source: The Charlottesville Daily Progress Contributor: Ronnie Fitzgerald -------------------------------------------------------------------- Fred Crowell Wray, 70 of Schuyler, died of cancer Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Kemp Wray and Annie Ethel Davidson Wray, and his brother La Gouri Wray, all of Schuyler. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Naomi Ruth Gleason Wray; his children, Gregory Allan Wray and his wife, Sherryl Broverman, of Stony Brook, N.Y., Cynthia Marian Wray Wannamaker of Leesburg and Jennifer Susan Wray Olson and her husband, Jonathan, of Watkinsville, Ga.; his brothers, Edsel Wray and his wife, Virgi, of Manassas and Boyce Wray and his wife, Carolyn, of Locust Grove; and his sister, Valda Wray Mulkey of Schuyler. He also is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Anya, Allyson, Calvin, Elias, Clifton and Livia, as well as by many dear adoptive children and grandchildren in India and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Virginia. The Rev. Fred Crowell Wray was an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church, a member of the Virginia Annual Conference, and missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. He served the Lord for 40 years in India, teaching "The Work of the Pastor" at Leonard Theological College in Jabalpur, central India. At various times he served congregations in Calcutta, Lucknow, Jabalpur, Pune, and Bombay. He established the Archives of the Methodist Church in India, had published several books of the history of various Indian Methodist churches and institutions, and in the later years of his life in Bombay, took a group of homeless street boys under his loving care. A good proportion of the present day leadership of both Protestant and Orthodox churches in India credit Rev. Wray for their pastoral education. For the past 10 years, he has lived in his home town of Schuyler where he helped establish the Community Library and the Walton’s Mountain Museum. He also has been active in the work of the Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank in Charlottesville and involved in the ministry of the New Faith United Methodist Church in Schuyler. He graduated from Lynchburg College in 1949, completed his theological education at Weslyan Seminary in Maryland (presently Wesley Seminary in Washington, D.C.) In 1952, took his M. Th. in preaching at Boston University in 1957 and his master’s degree in library science (archives) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1979. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service Saturday, Feb. 20., 1999, at 10 a.m. at New Faith United Methodist Church in Schuyler. The Rev. Glenn Phillips will lead the service. Rev. Wray has requested that flowers please be omitted and memorial contributions considered for Hospice of the Piedmont 1290 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Va. 22901 or for New Faith UMC, Schuyler, Va. 22969.
