Will: John Hatter, 1819 Source: Nelson Co., VA Will Book B, Page 115 Contributor: Clarence (Billy) Hatter -------------------------------------------------------- I, John Hatter, of the county of Nelson, being far advanced in years, and in poor state of health, but perfectly sound in mind and memory, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following, to wit: Item, I wish for my just debts to be paid. I bequeath and leave to my wife Mary one-third part of the plantation lying on the South side of Tye River with the dwelling house, and one negro woman called Rose, likewise two milk cows, one sow and pigs, one bed and furniture, and one pot and oven during her life time. Item, It is my wish that all my personal and real property of every description shall be equally divided among my children, share and share alike. I bequeath and give to my son Benjamin Hatter all that tract of land whereon he has built a house, on the North side of Tye River, to him and his heirs forever. In consequence of which the said Benjamin is to have no share of any part of lands on the South side of Tye River hereafter. It is my wish that my son John Hatter shall pay one hundred pounds current money of Virginia to be equally divided among my children, which money I lent him. It is likewise my wish that my son Samuel Hatter shall pay the rest of my children thirty-seven pounds current money of Virginia to be equally divided among them, which money I lent him. It is my desire that John Forbes shall pay to my children sixteen pounds current money of Virginia to be equally divided among them, which money I lent him. John Hatter’s one hundred pounds, and Samuel Hatter’s thirty-seven pounds, and John Forbes’ sixteen pounds is to be paid out of their part of their legacies left them by my will. It is my wish that my son Joseph shall be taken good care of among his brothers and sisters and be supported on the property left to him. I wish for my several legatees to pay my son Jesse Hatter one hundred and fifty dollars current money of Virginia. I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Jesse Hatter as Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills heretofore by me made. At a court held for Nelson County the 28th day of August 1820, this instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testament of John Hatter, dec’d, was produced in Court and proved by the oath of William B. Jacobs, a subscribing witness thereto and ordered to be for further proof and at a Court held in the said Count the 25th day of September 1820, it was again produced in Court and fully proved by the oath of John Carr, Junr., a second subscribing witness thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
