Bond: Bastardy Bond, Alexander Mays, 1856 Source: Nelson County Will Book K, Page 365 Contributed by: Sylvia Ray (SylviaCamdenRay@aol.com) ------------------------------------------------------------ Know all men by these presents, that we Alexander Mays and Jesse Mays are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia in the just and full sum of three hundred and fifty dollars to the payment whereof well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves and each of us and each of our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this 22nd day of September 1856. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas by an order of the County Court of Nelson County, Alexander Mays was adjudged to be the father of a Male Bastard Child begotten of Elizabeth Jones, which is likely to become chargeable upon the County, and it was further adjudged that the said Alexander Mays should pay to the Overseer of the Poor of this County for the benefit of said bastard child the sum of twenty five dollars per year commencing on the 23rd day of February 1856 and enter into bond with good security conditioned for the faithful discharge of this order. Now if the said Alexander Mays shall observe and perform the above order of the Court against him as aforesaid, then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
