DIVISION OF SLAVES: Estate of James Wills, Deceased SOURCE: Nelson County Will Book C, Page 189 CONTRIBUTOR: Sylvia Ray ----------------------------------------------------------- In pursuance of an order of Court of Nelson County to us directed we the undersigned did on the 5th day of December 1821 proceed to divide the slaves of which James Wills, deceased, siezed and possessed agreeably to his last will and testament. We divided the negroes into as many lots as there were Legatees as nearly equal as we could and preapred tickets for each lot and reported them on a list and a little child drew for each Legatee as follows. John Thompson who intermarried with one of the Legatees - negroes James, Alley, Keziah and her three children valued at $1275.00 Mary Hill, another Legatee - negroes Warwick, Will, Simon and wife, and Louisa $1100.00 John Wills - negroes Simon, JW, Abram, Mary and her two children $1150.00 Lawrence Wills - negroes Tuser and wife, Daniel, and John valued at $1000.00 James Martin who intermarried with Rebecca Wills another Legatee, negroes Adam, Moran, and Reuben valued at $1125.00 Willis H. Wills - negroes Peter, Ruffian, Edmund, Jane and her child $1150.00 Joseph C. Higginbotham who intermarried with another of the Legatees - negroes Jack, Rose and her three youngest children $1000.00 Catlett Wills - Negroes Ben, Lydia, Olive, and Wiatt valued at $1200.00 Dabney T. Phillips who intermarried with another of the Legatees - negroes Jesse, Jeremiah, and Jane and her two youngest children $1125.00 Which said several lots were set apart and delivered to each Legatee as aforesaid and with which they all expressed their entire satisfaction.
