NEW KENT COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and burying ground: 1937 May 21 Research made by James Archer Evans Cemetery Location: From Richmond City Limits east 23 miles on Route #4 to Talleysville, Virginia, thence 2 miles northeast from Talleysville, Va., on Route #155 to St. Peter’s Church and Burying Ground, on west side of the highway. New Kent County, Virginia DATE: Founded in 1684. Built in 1703. OWNERS: Owned by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Parish. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is said that Davis Mossom, who was Rector at St. Peter’s for forty years, was the minister who married George Washington and Mary Custis and according to tradition, the wedding took place here. Cut in the old brick walls all around the church are hundreds of initials and dates, many almost entirely obliterated but the following stand out clearly after the years: “H.W. 1812 – W.H. 1811 – S J H April 8, 1828 – H. B. M. 1843 – T.A.H. 1805 – A.K. 1832 – A.P. 1829 – E. Nancet 1814 – I Dav 1710 – Dibbrell 1773 – Thos Poilay 1767 – J.H.G. 1862 – M. May 8, 1862 – E Prior N Y 1862 – C W Malkey Pvt Cavalry 1862 – J H C 1862 – W.H. 1862” and many others of later date. Surrounding the fine old church is a heavy wire fence put together with iron pipe and enclosing a space of approximately six acres, which is the church yard at the from and contains the burial sections at the rear. Listed below are some of the fine old tombstones and markers in this historic old spot. Under the spreading branches of oaks, several more than fifteen feet in circumference, grand old walnut and cedar trees lie some of the very people or their issue who were the warp and woof of Historic old New Kent County. One very fine old granite stone, standing immediately at the rear of the church has the following: HERE Lies Interred the body of Elizabeth wife of Mr. John Reynolds of the City of Bristol Marriner and Daughter of the Rev. Mr. David Mossom Rector of this Parish. She Departed this life December the 24th 1754 Aged 30 years HERE Lie Interred the bones of Thomas and Robert Sons of the Rev. Mr. David Mossom Rector of this Parish.
