City of Newport News, Virginia DATE: Earliest date not obtainable. OWNERS: Crafford Family (original) United States Government, (present owner) 1918 - . (1937) DESCRIPTION: Part of a large battery runs across the Family Graveyard of the Craffords, The rest is grown up in underbrush and honeysuckle. There are no tombstones. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: During the War Between the States, the battery called Fort Crafford was built on part of the Crafford family burying ground. There were never any tombstones. The graves were marked by trees planted at the head and foot.
