City of Newport News, Virginia DATE: About 1750. OWNERS: It belongs to the Lee descendants, and it has always belonged to the Lee family. DESCRIPTION: The Lee graveyard is situated in the edge of the woods. There are several big walnut trees. Grass and weeds are growing, as no care is taken of it. The older graves were marked with little cedar monuments, which have rotted through the years. Some were never marked. There are five tombstones there at present, which are of a more recent date. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This Lee graveyard is the family burying ground of the Lees of the “Lee Hall” estate. The earliest date of the graveyard could not be arrived at, but “Lee Hall” was established in early 1700, so this graveyard had its beginning a little later.
