CITY OF NEWPORT NEWS, VA - CEMETERIES – Russell Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Russell graveyard: 1937 Jan. 11 Research made by Dorothy Diffenderfer Cemetery Location: 1.6 miles north of Harpersville, Virginia on Route #515, thence .2 mile on west side of highway, in the woods. City of Newport News, Virginia DATE: 1851, date of oldest grave (marker). OWNERS: Russell family. DESCRIPTION: The Russell graveyard lies in a beautiful grove of ancient walnut trees. It is grown up in grass and underbrush. The graves are very hard to find. There are several small cedar markers, which have almost rotted away. Some of the graves are not marked at all. There are two large, flat slabs, which were cracked, but which were remodelled recently. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions were copied from the tombstones: In Memory of Col. Thomas C. Russell of Rase-down, York County, Virginia Born Jan y 4th 1793 Died Dec. 2nd 1851 Few men have lived and died more beloved and respected. The nobleness and generosity of his nature, the purity and elevation of His character. The warmth and disinterestedness of his friendships were acknowledged and Admired by all who knew him. His friends were numerous and devoted, Two of them have Caused this monument to be erected in testimony of their regards and in commemoration of the virtues which adorned his life. To My Husband Edward S.
