A native of Nansemond County, he had been a resident for the past 50 years. He was a member of First Congregational Christian Church, the Progressive Bible Class and the Retired Men’s Club. He was retired in 1952 as an employee of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. after 37 years of service. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Hortense Stanley Duke of Newport News; two sons, Richard Thomas Duke Jr., and C.F. Duke of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. E.C. Luke of Suffolk, Mrs. William Parker and Mrs. Sadie Putnam, both of Portsmouth; one half-brother, Edwin Duke of Portsmouth, and four grandchildren. DUKE, Sr., 72, DIES Richard Thomas Duke Sr., 72, retired in 1952 from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. after 37 years' service, died Monday in Riverside Hospital after a short illness. Born in Nansemond County, he had lived in Newport News 50 years. He was a member of First Congregational Christian Church where funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Jesse H. Dollar, D.D., pastor. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hortense Stanley Duke; two sons, R.T. Duke Jr. of Newport News, and Charles Fred Duke of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. E.C. Luke of Suffolk, and Mrs. William Parker and Mrs. Sadie Putnam of Portsmouth; half brother, Edwin Duke, of Portsmouth, and four grandchildren, Richard T. Duke and Myra Lynn Duke and Paul H. Duke of Newport News, and Vicy Ann Duke, Detroit. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. The body will be at Peninsula Funeral Home until noon Wednesday when it will be placed in the church. Pallbearers will be John W. Holland, Raymond Holland, John Nicholass Jr., Lake Holtzclaw, G.G. Givens, Russell Turner, George N. Gandy and M.E. Benton.
