He was born July 29, 1920, in Elon, N.C., and came to the Virginia Peninsula in 1941. He was predeceased by his parents, Rev. C.E. and Frances E. Gerringer, and a brother, Raymond E. Gerringer. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Juanita S. Gerringer, who has lovingly cared for him during his years of health and illness. He is also survived by two daughters, Linda G. Gerringer of Virginia Beach and Pamela G. Roberts and husband, H. Eugene Roberts, of Newport News, and two granddaughters, Lindsey R. Mason and husband, Kevin, and stepson, Jaden, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Shelby N. Roberts of Newport News. He is also survived by three brothers, Carr E. Gerringer and wife, Marie, A. Harper Gerringer and wife, Ruth, all of Newport News, and J. Earl Gerringer and wife, Nell, of Hampton along with numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh served in the Army/Air Corps during World War II as a Chief Radar Operator in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He retired as a superintendent from Newport News Shipbuilding after 43 years of service. He attended Orcutt Baptist Church in Newport News. Hugh was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Williamsburg Country Club where he spent many happy days beating his fellow golfers. In 1975, at age 65, he won the Club Championship. Hugh was always a gentle man with a warm smile and a quick sense of humor that lasted until his final days. He will be greatly missed by those who love him and we are all grateful that he is finally at peace. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Orcutt Baptist Church, 653 Baxter Lane, Newport News. A reception will be held immediately following the service for visitation with the family. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Orcutt Baptist Building Fund or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements will be handled by Peninsula Funeral Home.
