Holt NEWPORT NEWS - Mrs. Maria Reynolds Holt, 93, widow of Saxon W. Holt, a Virginia state senator and lieutenant governor, died Friday in a nursing home. A native of Norfolk, she was a resident of Newport News for 74 years. She lived at 5712 Huntington Ave. In 1904 she married Holt, who died in 1940. Holt was a state senator for 36 years and was elected lieutenant governor in 1938. He died two years later while still in office. He represented the cities of Newport News and Hampton, and Elizabeth City, York, and Warwick counties in the Senate. She was a member of Newport News First Presbyterian Church, Women of the Church, and Hampton Roads Garden Club. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James Sprigg of Smithfield, and two sons, Saxon W. Holt Jr. of Virginia Beach and M. Quincy Holt of Newport News. A funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. in Newport News First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with Peninsula Funeral Home in charge. Her parents, Henry Singleton & Mary Carrington (WATKINS) REYNOLDS, are also marked there, although her father (1835 - 1895) was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk. D.Cert. 74-003942 Her father was a Confederate veteran, having served in Co. H, 6th VA Infantry. He enlisted as a private and was promoted to 2nd lieutenant.
