Mrs. Van K. Uzzell in Her Mother's Care. NORFOLK, VA., Sept. 5.-(Special.)- Mrs. Mary Uzzell, the Newport News woman who eloped to Portsmouth with her brother-in-law, T.H. Uzzell, was ar- raigned in court to-day and later turned over to her mother, who carried her back to Newport News. Uzzell and the woman separated their effects in the office of Mayor Riddick. The mother would permit her daughter to say noth- ing to the man and after each had their clothing they left. Mrs. Uzzell's sister, now employed in a Norfolk ice-cream sa- loon, said she was also forced to leave her husband, bad treatment being al- ledged. The husband is now in Newport News. G.A. Thomas, a prescription clerk, was badly burned in an incipient fire in Bur- row's Main-street drug store this after- noon. NEWPORT NEWS, VA., September 5.- (Special.)- Mrs. Van K. Uzzell, who was arrested in Portsmouth last night in [column break] [col. 3] the house of a negro woman, in company with her brother-in-law, L.H. Uzzell, was brought back to Newport News this afternoon by her mother, Mrs. Strans- bury, with whom she is stopping. This morning Van Uzzell, who went to Norfolk and swore out a warrant for the arrest of his wife and his brother, returned to the city, bringing his 8-months-old baby, whom the mother took away with her on leaving home, but who was not with her when she was found with her brother-in-law in the Portsmouth house. Mr. Uzzell left later in the day with the child for Isle of Wight county, where he will place the infant with his brother, William Uzzell. He says he will not live with his wife again and may institute divorce proceed- ings. The brother, who induced the wo- man to leave with him, is a half brother of Gus T. Uzzell, a leading merchant. Van Uzzell, the wronged husband, is a well-known contractor, and has lived here for some years. G.T. Uzzell, was the only member of the family, who could be found to-day, and he gave out this statement:, "Van K. Uzzell is my half brother. He has lived here for many years, and has established a reputation of being tho- roughly honest. He married this woman, whose name was Stransbury, about eight- een months ago, and they have lived to- gether at No. 1154 Twenty-second street. "L.H. Uzzell, also my half brother, is a worthless fellow with whom I long ago refused to associate. He came here in April, ragged and penniless, and his brother took him in and gave him a home. NEWPORT NEWS, VA., December 12.-(Special.)- Van K. Uzzell to-day sued for divorce from his wife, Nancy H. Uzzell. He names his brother as co- respondent. "The Times:" Richmond, Va. Saturday, December 13, 1902 (Vol. 17, No. 264) p. 3, col. 2 NEWPORT NEWS DIVORCE SUIT. (Special Dispatch to The Times.) NEWPORT NEWS, VA., Dec. 12. A divorce suit was instituted this morn- ing, in the Corporation Court here by Van K. Uzzell against his wife, Nancy H. Uzzell. Statutory grounds will be al- ledged, the correspondent being a brother of the plaintiff. A few months ago considerable interest was aroused by Mr. Uzzell swearing out a warrant against his brother and wife, charging them with a statutory offense. The warrant was tried in Norfolk, where the couple had gone, and upon the trial they were discharged. Mr. Van Uzzell has one child. Arthur DUGUID 20 Jul 1897 in Petersburg, but things must not have worked out. He appears as single in the 1900 Census, living with his mother in New Bern, Craven Co., NC. Vanakin 2m. Sallie C. BLAND; record not found in VA or NC. His bro Ocie J. m. 1897 her sis Clara Y. Vanakin & Sallie are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. Vanakin was reunited with his son Guy after some 52 years.
