Tines Sentenced, 1857 - Norfolk Co. VA The following was transcribed from the Richmond Whig & Public Advertiser (May 29, 1857). The original may be found at the Library of Virginia on microfilm. "SENTANCED. - Mary TINES, a free colored woman, charged with stealing a gold watch from Miss Virginia MATHEWS, has been convicted, in Norfolk, of grand larceny, and sentenced to the Penitary [sic] for a term of five years."
