Thursday, September 5th 1901 Captain Thomas Ashbury Gatch, a former well known citizen of this city, died at his home in Baltimore Sunday of heart failure, superinduced by asthma, with which he had for years been a constant sufferer. Captain Gatch was born in this city March 14, 1832. His preliminary education was received at the Norfolk Military Academy, but afterward he went to the Randolph Macon College from which he was graduated with the higest honors. Immediately after graduating he became principal of the preparatory school of the college. Subsequently he became professor of mathematics in the Southern University at Greensboro, Alabama. On the outbreak of the Civil War he resigned his position and returned to Norfolk. Captain Gatch, during his long residence in the city was a member of the Granby Street Methodist Church. His ancestors were among the founders of the Methodist Church in this country.
