Grant were yesterday consigned to their last resting place in Elmwood Cemetery. The funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning, a large crowd being present, among them were the members of the Fire Department and Volunteer Veterans' Association, headed by the Naval Post Band, under the leadership of Profesor(sic)J.M. Price. The services were conducted by the Rev. J. R. Howerton, D.D., whose beautiful language touched the hearers. He dwelt upon the fact that the call to another life frequently comes with the suddenness of a fire alarm. He thought that the firemen should be carried in the hearts and in the prayers of all, because of the suddenness with which they may have to give up life. It was a touching talk and must have been especially so to the firemen present, to whom he said: "If the sudden warning should come to you, are you ready to go? Are you watching your souls' interest as closely as you are watching the safety of our homes?" The floral tributes were very handsome, the fire department sending a heart and a hook and ladder, surmounted with a dove. The flower bearers were Captain F. Vance, of the Veterans' Association, and Captain George G. Cummings, of the State Firemen's Association. The pall-bearers were: Fire Department - John S. Webber, George Seddinger, and Dennis Hickey; Veteran Firemen's Association - John A. Anderson, and John Hill; Citizens- E.G. Rogers, M.Ryan, and V. Morris. Ex-Chief Kevill and several ex-members of the Norfolk Fire Department, who had been associated with the dead man were also present.
