McCLOUD, SR., DIED YESTERDAY MORNING" John A. McCloud, Sr., one of the best known and oldest citizens of South Norfolk died yesterday morning at 9:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Katie E. Lattimer, 12 Poindexter Street, in the 78th year of his age, after a lingering illness lasting more than a year. The deceased was a native of Princess Anne county, but moved to South Norfolk more than fifty years ago, was one of its pioneering citizens and was a strong factor in its growth and development. He conducted a successful grocery business with his son, John A. McCloud, Jr. until ten years ago, when he was compelled to retire on account of his health, the business being continued several years afterwards by the junior member of the firm. The deceased was beloved by a large circle of friends and admirers for his acts of benevelance and for his encouragement and support of good causes. He was known to have aided several young men in securing their education, some of whom are ministers and factors in educational work. His aid to Elon College, of Elon, N.C., was also a great factor in the early life of that institution. He was a quiet citizen and always interested himself in the welfare of those he knew. He was a member of Berkley lodge 167 A.F. & A.M. and Oakdale lodge 78 I.O. O. F. and had a large circle of friends who will regret to learn of his death. Mr. McCloud is survived by four children: John A. McCloud, Jr., Geo R. McCloud, Jesse McCloud and Mrs. Katie E. Latimer. Also two brothers, Eugene and Lewis McCloud. The funeral takes place from the above residence Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock and the interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley ward.
