Norfolk Virginian May 27, 1879


Monday morning, at 6 o'clock, at the residence of her son, Rev. S.L. Thrift, 
Mrs. SARAH L. THRIFT, aged 70 years and 10 months.
The funeral will take place TUESDAY AFTERNOON at 4 o'clock from the Cumberland 
Street M.E. Church. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to 
attend.

               Obsequies of the Late Mrs. Sarah L. Thrift

The funeral of this aged and much esteemed Christian lady took place from the 
Cumberland Street M.E. Church yesterday afternoon at four o'clock. The solemn 
service was conducted by the pastor Rev. W.H. Christian, who, after reading the 
usual lessons appropriate to funeral occasions, delivered an impressive address 
on the subject of Death. During the course of his remarks the speaker took 
occasion to speak of the many virtues of the deceased, as well as the purity of 
her life and Christian character, admonishing his hearers to emulate her Godly 
example that their last end might, like hers, be peaceful and triumphant. On the 
conclusion of the solemnities at the church the remains were borne to the silent 
city of the dead and there deposited in accordance with the solemn rites of the 
church of which she had been a consistent and exemplary member to await the 
resurrection of the just. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Messrs. 
J.H. Dawson, Caleb Dawley, Samuel Peed, Benjamin M. Harrison, R.D. Satchell and 
W.H. Fletcher.
