NORFOLK COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Cedar Grove Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Cedar Grove Cemetery: 1937 Dec. 10 Research made by Daisy F. Lawrence Cemetery Location: The north entrance opens on Princess Anne Avenue, between Monticello Avenue and Chapel streets, Norfolk, Virginia. The gates on the south side, once used exclusively, are now kept locked. Norfolk County, Virginia DATE: 1818. OWNERS: Norfolk County, 1818-1937 Norfolk City. DESCRIPTION: There is a very large space for the burial of the white. Naturally one would suppose it took its name from the many cedar trees growing there. None of the original trees remain. Old cedars planted later are still there. There is a brick wall, with large iron gates. In here one finds most of the graves raised in mounds, many of them covered with ivy, usually marked with small, upright slabs. There are many family vaults, of brick or stone, in this old cemetery. A few small family mausoleums of more recent date are to be found here. Some of the tombstones are very old, older than the cemetery itself. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: One tombstone, dated 1805, is thought to have been brought from some other place. Many tragedies of war and pestilence are recorded in stone. On one large, square monument is inscribed the names of nine members of one family who succumbed at stated intervals during the summer of 1855, when that dreadful tropical fever attached the citizens of Norfolk, Virginia. A monument, erected in memory of the Guyat family, French-born citizens, marks the parents’ graves, and inscribed the War records of the three sons, who fill heroes’ graves away from here. They had enlisted under the Confederate Stars and Bars: Thomas fell in battle near Chickahominy; Robert died in a Federal prison; and Charles succumbed to Camp fever.
