Two colored men who were sitting on the wharf saw the child struggling in the water, but were unable to render any assistance as neither could swim. Little George Lufsey, a 12-year-old son of Mr. George J. Lufsey, of Brinkley & Co.’s wholesale grocery store, saw the little girl as she was sinking for the last time. Without waiting for any instructions, the little hero jumped headlong into the water and, after a hard struggle, brought the child to shore. The rescue was witnessed by quite a number of people, all of whom bestowed congratulations on the hero. Little George has done many other brave acts, and he is proud of the fact that several persons owe their lives to him.
