ABBOTT, JR., DIES OF INJURIES FROM AUTO CRASH Son of Attorney Succumbs Few Hours After Accident On Granby Street Fred C. Abbott, Jr., 15-year-old son of Fred C. Abbott, prominent local attorney, and Mrs. Alydia Dey Abbott, died yesterday morning at 5:15 o'clock at St. Vincent's Hospital from injuries received shortly after midnight in an automobile accident on Granby Street at "Dead Man's Curve." The accident occurred at 12:15 o'clock and the boy never regained consciousness. Young Abbott with Winston Nash, Jr., 605 Marshall Avenue, about his own age, was returning to Norfolk after attending a party at Ocean View. The boys were riding in a Ford coupe. According to Detectives W.C. Spencer and J.A. Winslow, the car suddenly swerved to the left side of the road, then back on the concrete and then back off the right side of the road and turned over several times. Detective Leon Nowitzky, coroner's investigator, said he learned the car was traveling at a rapid rate of speed when the accident occurred. The accident happened just a few feet south of "Dead Man's Curve," located near Ward's Corner. The injured boys were carried to St .Vincent's Hospital by A.E. Pearson, 200 Chesapeake Street. Nash was only slightly bruised about his legs and body. Abbott was severely injured about the face and head. Abbott was a student in the junior class at Maury High School and was popular with his classmates. He attended McKendree Methodist Church Sunday School and was a member of the church scout troop. He is survived by his parents and one brother, William Abbott. The body was removed from the James V. Derry Funeral Home yesterday at 340 West Princess Anne Road to the residence of his parents at 814 Park Avenue, where funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. Charles E. Blankenship, pastor of McKendree Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
