Mrs. Abeles was born on Aug. 8, 1904 in Norfolk, the daughter of Richard Calvert and Cecilia Ashton Taylor. She was the wife of Charles Taussig Abeles, who preceded her in death, as did her daughter Sally Abeles Gran of New York. Survivors include a son, Charles Calvert Abeles of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Cecilia Ashton Taylor and Virginia Key Taylor of Norfolk, and Elizabeth Taylor Little of Virginia Beach, as well as four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Abeles was active for many years in the charitable and cultural life of Norfolk, especially with The Community Fund (predecessor to United Way) and The Norfolk Symphony. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. A graveside service will be conducted at noon, Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk by the Rev. Julian B. Goodman. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Infant Home or to a charity of choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
