Phillip W. Adams, a Norfolk detective for 31 years and recipient of 28 commendations for his police work and courtesy, died Friday in a hospital. Adams was the husband of the late Mrs. Gertrude Harris Smith Adams and was a son of Hiram R. and Mrs. Gertrude Hanes Adams. He joined the Norfolk Police Division in 1920, became a detective in 1928, and was promoted to sergeant in 1948. In 1954, he was transferred to the Maintenance and Supply Bureau, overseeing motor equipment, because of his 11 years' experience in the auto theft squad, according to police records. A native of Durham, N.C., he lived in Norfolk 60 years, lately at 230 E. Gilpin Ave. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Wesleyman Bible Class. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Hollingsworth, of Washington, and Mrs. Annie Willis, of Arcadia, Calif. A funeral will be at noon Monday at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
