He was a co-founder and vice-chairman of the Addington- Beaman Lumber Co. He was the husband of Mrs. Helen Murphy Addington of Virginia Beach. Mr. Addington launched his company in 1925 with the late Al Beaman, but his family's attachment to the industry went back much further. His father, Frank Addington operated saw mills throughout North Carolina most of his life. Joseph Addington, Sr., bought a share of the old Murray Lumber Co. in Norfolk in 1921, and hired Al Beaman to work there in 1923. Two years later, the pair decided to become partners. Mr. Addington served many years as president and then as chairman of the board prior to becoming vice chairman. Mr. Addington was a native of Wharton, N.C., and had been a Hampton Roads resident since 1900. He attended Maury High School and was a graduate of Oakridge Academy, Oakridge, N.C. He served in the Marine Corps in World War II. Besides his wife, other survivors include two daughters, Margaret Addington Twohy of Norfolk and Helen Addington Passano of Gibson, Md.; two sons, Joseph C. Addington, Jr., of Virginia Beach and Dr. William F. Addington of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mary Addington Leonard of Baton Rogue, La.; a brother, Richard F. Addington of Brea, Ca.; 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in All Saints Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach. Burial will be in the family burial site in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, with H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road, in charge. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
