Friends and acquaintances of the family are invited to attend. ********** Death of a Well Known Gentleman It is with the deepest regret that we record this morning the death of Mr. Jas. C. Adkisson, who departed this life yesterday at half past 4 o'clock, after a brief illness and very unexpectedly. His demise was a severe shock to hundreds of friends and acquaintances in Norfolk, as it closed the earthly career of one whose many fine qualities of heart had won the affections of all who knew him. Mr. Adkisson was a native of Mecklenburg County and a printer by profession, working up to the time of his last illness on The Virginian. He served his state with gallantry during the war, uniting himself with the artillery branch of the service (the noted Crenshaw Battery), where he performed the duties of a soldier nobly and well. After the war he returned to Richmond and was employed until the summer of 1865 on the Republic newspaper. In the fall of that year he came to Norfolk and worked on the Daily Post. In November of the same year he became connected with The Virginian as compositor under Messrs. Branch & Sykes and remained on the paper in that capacity until 1866 when he became one of its proprietors. He has ever since been identified with the paper and during his connection with it in several capacities endeared himself to his associates and co-laborers. Warm hearted, liberal and affectionate he was a true friend and fond husband and father. In his family circle he was loving and considerate and was in return devotedly beloved. He leaves a wife and family of small children, who have the warmest sympathies of the community in their terrible affliction. The deceased was about 39 years of age. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from his late residence No.171 Church Street.
