Michael J. Ahern, chaplain of Old Point Comfort College, died suddenly on a Baltimore steamer while on his way to Norfolk Thursday night. Father Ahern was en route to Norfolk to attend the funeral of Rev. Father Doherty of St. Mary's Church, who died suddenly Thursday morning. The two priests had been friends for many years and the news of the death of Father Doherty is believed to have proven a great shock to Father Ahern, who had not been in good health for several years. Father Ahern, because of his failing health, had made several trips to Baltimore for the purpose of receiving treatment in hospitals in the monumental city. He was one of the best-known priests in Virginia and was widely known in Baltimore and Washington. Father Ahern was 50 years old and had labored in many parishes in the Virginia diocese during the past 24 years. He was formerly pastor of St. Mary's Church at Old Point Comfort and has frequently celebrated mass in St. Mary's Church, Norfolk. His death, coming so soon after that of father Doherty, deprives the Catholic diocese of Virginia of two of its most zealous workers. The two priests, who had been such close friends in life, will be buried at the same time Monday morning. The funeral of Father Ahern will take place at St. Mary's Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock. It will be a double funeral service and will be attended by Rt. Rev. Bishop O'Connell of the Virginia diocese and by priests from all over Virginia and several other states. Father Ahern is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lynch, of Winchester, Va. Father Ahern was a native of Martinsville, Va., and had been in the Virginia diocese for 24 years.
