Jessie Atif Akbar, 46, of the 900 block of Hayes St., died peacefully on
Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Bailey-Seton Hospital in Staten Island, N.Y.

He was a native of Norfolk and the son of Annie P. Adams Hayes and the late
Rufus Hayes Sr.

Mr. Akbar was self employed as a commercial and residential roofer and was also
a vendor for seafood and clothing for many years in the Norfolk area. He was
affiliated with the Masjid William Salaam.

He is survived by his wife, Linda A. Akbar; a daughter, Karima T. White; two
sons, Deshon White and Rasul Akbar; his mother; seven sisters, Elaine Hudgins,
Janice King, Vanessa Little, Loretta Riddick, Sandra Snead, Martha Parker and
Cheryl Watson; three brothers, Stanley Hayes, Michael Hayes and Troy Hayes; four
grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

An Islamic burial ceremony will be held on Monday at noon by Brother Hamidullah
Shabazz in the Chapel of Riddick Funeral Service. Burial will be in Calvary
Cemetery . Viewing will be today from 1 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. The
family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Riddick
Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
