He was born in Legazpi, Phillipines, and was the widower of Maria Corazon Ala. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service and also from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Little Creek Amphibious Base Catholic Chapel. He was the first Filipino-American to serve aboard a U.S. Navy submarine and one of the first to sail under the North Pole while serving aboard the nuclear submarine USS Nautilus. He also served aboard the USS America, the USS Archer Fish and the USS Galeo. Mr. Ala is survived by two sons, Michael Angelo Ala and Nelson Christopher Ala, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Maria Elena Leoner and Teresita Ala, both of Legazpi City, Phillipines; four brothers, Victorio Ala of Manila, Phillipines, Rosolio Ala, Jr., of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Santiago Ala and Nicholas Ala, both of Legazpi City, Phillipines. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel by Fr. Ron Kawczynski. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.
