Alford Jr.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Barbara J. Gaither of Norfolk, Mrs. Mabelle Trousdale of Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. Dorothy Hill of New York City; two stepsons, Charles H. Rainier and Robert M. Rainier, both of Norfolk; five sisters, Mrs. Sally Mathews of Portsmouth, Mrs. Elsie Mae Andrews of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. Bessie Jones of Greenville, N.C., Mrs. Annie Cherry of Bethel, N.C., and Mrs. Effie Whitehurst of Tarboro, N.C.; four brothers, John H. Alford of Tarboro, Alfred Alford of Whitaker, N.C., Cleo Alford of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Paul W. Alford of Ahoskie, N.C. and 18 grandchildren. He was a native of Tarboro and lived in Norfolk 57 years. He was a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church, Mens Bible Class, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and F.O.E. Until his retirement in 1953 he was employed by the Norfolk & Western Railway 44 years.
