Allen, 34, organist, of 1015 Anderson street, died Sunday, March 5, in an anteroom of the First Calvary Baptist Church, where her late father, the Rev. O. J. Allen, pastored for 18 years prior to his death 22 months ago. HAD BEEN ILL Weakened by an illness which had kept her confined to her home under the care of a physician for the preceding three weeks, Miss Allen had arisen from a sick bed and made her way to the church by taxicab, with the hope of filling her place at the organ. She was organist of First Calvary’s Choir No. 2, serving on alternate Sundays with Miss Cora L. Colden, organist of Choir No. 1. DEATH INSTANTANEOUS Witnesses stated that the young woman succumbed just as she raised her arm to pull on her robe. Other choir members immediately sought to render first aid, but apparently death had been instantaneous. After being reviewed by the city coroner the body was removed to the Morning Glory Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at First Calvary Sunday, March 12, immediately following the morning services, with the Rev. W. L. Hamilton, pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church, officiating. The organist had been otherwise active in the church since coming to the city at the time her father assumed his pastorate here. Miss Allen was a 1929 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, and held a B. S. degree from Hampton Institute. She had also attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music. For some time she taught in Charlotte Court House, VA, and in Currituck County NC but for the five or six months prior to her illness had been employed as a recreation supervisor at Oakleaf Park Housing project, Campostella. The young woman is survived by her mother, Mrs. Ellen A. Allen, with whom she made her home at the Anderson street address; a daughter, Miss Ruth Kesner Allen; sister, Mrs. Mary Allen Copeland; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mattie Christian of Charlotte, NC; three aunts and a number of other relatives. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
