 A funeral service for Joseph Allen, 74, a self-employed carpenter, was held at
New Calvary Baptist Church on Wednesday, with the Rev. Samuel A. Wilson
officiating.
  Mr. Allen, who lived at 1016 Wood street, died at a Norfolk hospital on
Saturday following a short illness.  He was buried in Calvary Cemetery under
direction of the Hale Funeral Home.
  The deceased was a native of Warrenton, NC, and was the son of Will Boyd and
Mrs. Alice Boyd.  He had lived in Norfolk for more than 65 years, and had served
New Calvary Baptist usher board for more than 40 years.  He was a past president
of the board.
  Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eula Drew Allen, a son, Bennie Lee
Allen; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Allen Barrett,and Mrs. Alexina Snipes of
Norfolk and Mrs. Gladys Allen Smith of Baltimore; 10 grand children and seven
great grandchildren.
