Native of Sicily Came To Norfolk in 1899, Succumbs at Age of 65. Thomas Amato, Sr., 65, co-owner of the Sansone Fruit Company and a resident of Norfolk for 49 years, died at his residence, 633 West 28th Street, yesterday at 6 a.m. He had been in failing health for several years. Born in Termini, Sicily, in 1883, he came to the United Staes at the age of eight. Until he was 16, he was employed by his uncle in Detroit. He came to Norfolk in 1899 and went into business with Antonio Sansone, his future father-in-law. In 1904, he became a mewmber of a triple partnership in the firm, along with Sansone and his future brother-in-law, August E. Sansone. Shortly afterwards, he married Josie Sansone. She died in the flu epidemic of 1918 and he married Nellie Catherine Demma in July 1920. Mr. Amato frequently said that the highlight of his life was when he became a United States citizen a few years after he came to Norfolk. He was a son of the late Savory and Mrs. Rosina F. Amato. Besides his wife, Mrs. Nellie C. Amato, he is survived by three sons, Savory T. Amato, of Richmond; August J. and Thomas Amato, Jr., of Norfolk; one daughter, Mrs. Walter Finn, of Norfolk, and two granddaughters, Misses Josephine and Marion Finn. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Elks and the Knights of Columbus. The body was taken to H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments. A rosary service will be held tonight at the Amato residence at 7:30 o'clock. The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
