Mr. Ambrose was born in South Norfolk. He retired in 1977 from the Social Services office, city of Norfolk; and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Norfolk; Fleet Reserve Association, Branch (NU)60; and the South Norfolk Old Timers Club, Chesapeake. He was a World War II veteran and retired as a Navy chief petty officer after 21 1/2 years. He served in the Battle of Makassar Strait, the Battle of Badung Strait, the Battle of Java Sea, the Battle of Bali Strait, the Asiatic Campaign, the China Service, the Philippine Campaign, the North African Campaign, and received the Presidential Unit Citation. Survivors include his wife, Alice Barbara Ambrose; a daughter and son-in- law, Deborah A. Beaudoin and Keith Beaudoin of Norfolk; four sons and daughters-in-law, Henry B. Ambrose and Marie A. Ambrose of Norfolk, Thomas R. Ambrose of Norfolk, Robert J. Ambrose and Janice W. Ambrose of Chesapeake and John S. Ambrose and Kelli J. Ambrose of Durham, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Alexis M. Ambrose and Aaron J.B. Ambrose, both of Norfolk, Joseph T. Ambrose and Jacob M. Ambrose, both of Chesapeake, and Samuel V. Ambrose and David L. Ambrose, both of Durham, N.C. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Fran Moody. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
