PORTSMOUTH - Benjamin Owens Ames, 76, of 501 Dinwiddie Street, died Saturday in 
his home.
A native of Nansemond County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ruth Walker 
Ames. He was retired from Chapman’s Jewelers, Portsmouth, and was a member of 
Cradock United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ames Rawles of Chesapeake, and Mrs. 
Mary O. West of Portsmouth; two brothers, Richard B. Ames of Portsmouth, and 
Bruce S. Ames of Virginia Beach; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Snellings Funeral Home by the Rev. 
John Hamm and Dr. Carl W. Haley. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. 
The family will be at 4620 Kemp Drive, Portsmouth.
