D. Oliver Funeral Apartments. October, 2014 Mary Belle Nelson Amland, 86, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014, in her Virginia Beach residence. She was a retired owner and operator of a hair salon that served the Armed Forces Staff College for many years. Born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Beatrice Travis Patterson and Charlie Patterson, and was the widow of Howard H. Amland. Mrs. Amland graduated from high school in Tennessee and moved to Norfolk when she was 19 years old. She graduated from Hick's Beauty School in Norfolk. In the years past, she was very active in Christ the King Catholic Church. She served on the Board of St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery for many years and was active with the Friends of St. Mary's involvement in the beautification of the cemetery. She and a fellow board member designed and purchased the stained glass window for the new mausoleum in the cemetery. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Gretchen H. Goodwin, and her husband, John, of Indianapolis, IN; and two grandsons, Ian Kohl Goodwin, U.S.N., stationed in Sasebo, Japan, and Adam William Goodwin, of Indianapolis. A private funeral service will be conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
