LAWRENCE ANDERSON, ONE OF THE ORIGINAL TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

Lawrence Anderson Sr., of the 800 block of Gilmer Road, an instructor in the
training of black aviators in Tuskegee and director of the Ground School at the
primary level, died Sept. 25, 1992, in a hospital.

Mr. Anderson was born in Greensburg, Pa. While in high school, he attended and
worked at the Greensburg School of Aviation and the Latrobe School of Aviation.
Before his 19th birthday, he received civil aeronautics authority licenses in
several areas.

He later joined fellow aviators in Tidewater instructing civilians in obtaining
pilot's licenses. He worked at the Naval Air Rework Facility. After 25 years
with the Production Engineering Group, he retired as an operations analyst. He
worked for the city of Norfolk as a dispatcher for 10 years.

He was involved with the Ingleside Civic League, the Norfolk Parks and
Recreation Department and cooperative Hampton Roads organizations for minorities
in engineering. He was a member of the Tidewater Chapter of The Tuskegee Airmen
and the P-40 Warhawks Pilots Association.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Anderson; three daughters, Valerie J.
Anderson and Norma J. Anderson, both of Norfolk, and Leslie A. Morales of
Gaithersburg, Md.; a brother, Thomas Anderson of Ardmore, Pa.; and a grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Graves Funeral Home by the
Rev. James Griffin. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the
family at the residence.
