James B Anderson of Steamer Bedeburn Run Over at N & W Coal Pier.
As the result of being run over by a coal-laden car of the Norfolk & Western Railroad at Lamberts Point yesterday morning, James B Anderson, first mate of the British steamship Bedeburn, now loading coal at the pier, had his right leg severed and died while en route to St. Vincents Hospital in an ambulance.
Coroner Kight viewed the body and will hold an inquest today at noon. He examined a witness named Wood, but it appears that this witness, while with Anderson, did not see the accident. Wood, who is second mate on the Bedeburn, told Coroner Kight that he stepped to one side to let the car pass and immediately afterward Anderson was struck down.
From what could be learned of the case, it appears that Anderson was crossing the track at the foot of the ascent which leads to the pier and was knocked down by a car which was being backed up the incline.
It is stated that there was no flagman at the front of the car, nor was there any one near the track to warn pedestrians of the train's approach.
The Bedeburn is on her way from New Orleans, and after coaling here will clear for London, this she will probably do today. Besides taking on coal, she has a general cargo.
The dead man lived at 73 Ashley Road, South Shields, England. He is survived by a widow and three children. Barton Myers, the British consul at this port, was notified of the accident, and after being viewed by the coroner the body was turned over to Mr. Myers. It will be interred here.
