Anderson, it is said had been sick and confined to his room with fever and left the house while delirious. The immediate cause of death was a congestive chill and he died a few minutes after he fell to the ground and before medical assistance could be summoned. His body was taken to the station and examined by Coroner Newton who gave a certificate of death from natural causes. After the Coroner’s examination the body was turned over the dead man’s friends. Anderson was a German by birth, had been in this country for about fifteen years and was unmarried. At a late hour last night the body of the unfortunate man was taken to Mr. H.D. Oliver’s undertaking establishment, where it was prepared for burial. Norfolk Landmark, Sat., Dec. 28, 1889, pg. 1 William Anderson, a cotton screwman about thirty-three years of age, died suddenly near the station-house about half-past 7 o’clock last night, with congestive chill. Anderson had been confined to his room with fever, and came out in the air while suffering from a delirious spell, and had been on the street but a short time when the chill came on, causing death almost instantly. The body was taken to the station-house and after an examination by Coroner Newton was turned over to the dead man’s friends. The deceased was unmarried and was a native of Germany, but had resided in this country for fifteen years. Norfolk Virginian, Tues., Dec. 31, 1889, pg. 1 The funeral of Mr. C.M. Anderson whose sudden death was announced in The Virginian, took place at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon and was attended by a number of friends, the organization of cotton screwmen being present in a body. The service was conducted by Rev. O.S. Barten, D.D., the rector, and the remains were followed to the grave in Elmwood Cemetery by a long procession. The following gentlemen were the pall-bearers: Screwmen’s Benevolent Association-Wm. McManus, James Prince, Thomas McLoughlin, Thomas Ramsey, Robert B. Shearer and Jas Dunn.
